DENTAL MYTHS
  • Dental treatments are very painful.
(Latest Technology And Equipment Has Made Dentistry Patient Friendly And Virtually Painless)
  • Extraction of teeth impairs and adversely affects the eye sight. (It is the biggest myth)
  • Swelling caused by painful tooth should be fomented with hot water.
    (Swelling increases with hot fomentation)
  • There are visible worms in the teeth as shown by some unqualified doctors, that cause pain in teeth.
  • Use of tooth paste alone stops bad smell of the mouth.
Necessary treatment after examination by the Dental Surgeon is necessary to stop bad smell of dental origin.
  • Teeth become loose after cleaning by dental surgeon.
  • Extraction of wisdom teeth will make you unwise.
  • Orthodontic Treatments are done only after all permanent Teeth erupt.
  • Serious bleeding problems have frequently occurred after dental surgery has been performed in patients taking continuous anticoagulant therapy.
  • Dental surgery cannot be performed with minimal risk of postsurgical bleeding, and when bleeding does occur, It cannot be managed by using normal methods. (Studies have shown that patients taking anticoagulants and those with normal coagulation experience similar amounts of blood loss after dental surgery, and post operative bleeding can be managed as in patients not taking anticoagulants.)
  • Dental Treatment is very easy and require very little time.(Dentistry is a highly specialised science and require expertise and precision.)
  • Quacks Can Treat Dental Diseases The Same Way As Qualified Dentists Do.
(A Quack Is Not Trained To Treat Patients, Hence Is Liable To Cause Irreversible Damage To The Patient)Lack Of Scientific Knowledge And Education, Does Not Make A Quack Aware Of The Side Effects And Possible Complications Of A Treatment Or Sterlization Procedure.
  • One Must Visit A Dentist Only In Case Of Pain.
(Even Animals And Small Children Cry When They Have Pain)
  • Dental Treatment Is Very Expensive.
(It is Not, But Because Of The High Cost Of The Material And Equipment One May Feel So. That Is Why We Say "PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE"
  • Dental disease does not have any other systemic effect on the body.
(Dental Infections Can Cause Cardiac And Other Diseases. Oral Infection Can Act As A SEPTIC FOCII For Other Infections.)
  • Removing the cotton pack or gargling again and again will stop postextraction / operation bleeding.

WHEN A HEART ATTACK STRIKES
(Four vital minutes of first aid)
  1. Do not hesitate. The first minutes are Vital.
  2. Do not waste time running for help or telephoning an ambulance or a doctor. Go on with it. Feel for pulse points about an inch below each ear. If there is nothing there, the heart has stopped.
  3. Lie the victim on his back.
  4. Loosen clothing.
  5. Remove false teeth.
  6. Tilt the head back and clear the throat of any blockages by pressing your finger over the back of the tongue.
  7. Strike the Chest wall below the left nipple with a clinched fist hard enough to hurt an unconscious patient.
  8. After 5-6 blows if you still cannot feel a pulse, then start external heart compression.
  9. Compress the heart between the breast bone and spine about once a second, by firm, down-ward movements of the hands which should be placed, on top of each other, over the lower half of the breast bone.
  10. Repeat at least once a second for several seconds, then check the pulse again.
  11. Give the kiss of life if she or he has stopped breathing. It means blowing air into the mouth to get it into the lungs.
  12. Clear the throat, place your mouth over him in a big wide "Kiss". Pinch the nostrils together with thumb and forefinger and keep them closed.
  13. Inhale deeply and blow hard to pass a good flow of air from your lungs to the victim's.
  14. Check that his chest expands to show, that air is reaching the lungs.
  15. If the chest does not expand, pull his jaw further forward, make sure no air is escaping between your mouth & his, and blow harder.
  16. Keep checking his pulse points, and alternating his "kiss of life" with chest compression.
  17. As soon as the person's breathing and pulse are regular, place him on his side with his head well back and then telephone for a doctor or ambulance.

HOW TO TAKE MEDICINES
  1. There is a confusion among people about what one should take medicines with Water, tea, coffee or milk? Many think that taking vitamins and tonics with milk makes them more effective. This is not true.
  2. Milk hinders the absorption of Iron and Tetracycline, Multi-vitamins containing iron and antibiotics belonging to the tetracycline group ) should not be taken with milk.
  3. Similarly, carbonated drinks, fruit juices and tea make a bad combination with medicines. So, it is always better to take medicines with water. And preferably not on empty stomach if not advised otherwise.

PATIENT BEHAVIOUR
Your Doctor has to face many problems which are likely to spoil doctor - patient relationship. The following points are worth noting.

TIME
All good doctors are busy doctors. In the initial phase of practice the doctor may spend much more time with the patient. Often within couple of minutes, the doctor can give the patient; the best treatment, but the patient does not usually understand & thinks that the doctor has become too proud and has forgotten his old patient. This is not so. Be assured that the doctor always values his old patient.

GIFTS
Do not give gifts to doctors and take professional advantages later on. Quite often such gifts are no use to a doctor and he is forced to give them away to others.

SIDE EFFECTS
Many drugs may cause side effects. Let your doctor decide about the side effects & toxicity of the drug. If the fever increases after taking the drug, it is not always due to the drug but may be due to the disease itself.

DOCTOR KNOWS BEST
Do not pressurise your doctor to give very high potency drugs to control fever or pain or antimotility drugs to check diarrhoea. Because it will harm the patient in long run. QUESTIONING THE DOCTOR
Many patients are in the habit of advising and questioning the Doctor about the line of treatment. This is a bad habit and can annoy the Doctor. It is better to choose a good Doctor and then leave on him to decide the best course of action.Have faith in your Doctor.

INVESTIGATIONS
Drugs are not substitute for investigation. Investigations are better than costly drugs.

TELEPHONIC CONSULTATION
Avoid phoning the doctor and seeking his free advice and get his free prescription over long distance. This practice is dangerous to both, as it might lead to wrong diagnosis and you may lose doctors goodwill.

HOME VISIT
When a doctor leaves his clinic to attend to a house call, it causes inconvenience to the patients already waiting at the clinic. Please do not allow your relatives and friends seek free advice and waste doctors precious time: Please co-operate with the doctor to rush back to his Clinic and treat his patients.

ROAD SIDE CONSULTATIONS
Please do not catch the doctor at any time, anywhere - be it a party, or on a picnic, at a meeting, or even on the road and seek his free advice . Quite often such 'Corridor Consultation' may be faulty as the doctor himself does it half - heartedly.

CREDIT
Keeping bills unpaid even if you are well known to the doctor is the best way to spoil ones relationship. The doctor feels helpless, as there is nothing he can do to recover his dues.
